Branch Info

The Texas Branch of the American Society for Microbiology (ASM) was established in 1941 and is celebrating its 80th anniversary this year. We are a very active branch and hold two meetings per year to promote microbiology and the development of our next generation of scientists. While the bulk of our membership comes from academic settings (universities and community colleges), we are also anxious to build up members from industries and government agencies who also involve microbiology in their work.

Our larger fall meeting, typically held in late October or early November (November 4-5 in 2021) is an opportunity for students, postdocs, and faculty to share their work in a collegial and supportive environment. This meeting is held in different locations each year and this year is being hosted virtually by Texas State University, in San Marcos TX. There are awards for oral and poster presentations in several categories (undergraduate, graduate and postdoc). In pre-COVID times, our fall attendance was typically over 200.

The smaller spring meeting is geared towards undergraduates and beginning graduate students and is typically held in south-central Texas. In pre-COVID times this meeting was held at the T-Bar M conference center in New Braunfels. Our attendance at the spring meeting has grown from around 80 to over 130.

Aside from our love of science, we celebrate the achievements of our members at our meetings.
